How to approach the study of English poetry? Best strategy or methods?

I have completed my graduation in English literature. However, as it happens, in most cases, they could not be introduced to the vital concepts due to various reasons. My apathy towards studies and lack of guidance! Agreed.

I have now enrolled in a master’s program in English literature. Studying poetry, particularly, seems difficult. I have no idea how to study poetry. How to interpret poetry? How to approach learning, critically appreciating and understanding poetry?

Any help and guidance will be appreciated.

Thank you!

I think you should start with the fundamental concepts. What is poetry? How is this genre different from all other genres in literature? What were the phases in the history of English or British poetry?

Once you understand the context, you should aim for the essential literary terms you must know before studying poetry. Many students make this critical mistake. I did the same. Always learn the technical, aesthetic and vital literary terms and phrases associated with poetic craft, structure, and critique of poetry. For starters, many professors may distinguish between poetry and a poem on occasion. Do you see?

After understanding and learning the necessary literary terms, you should formulate your framework or methodology to scan a poem, intellectually and aesthetically.

This has been extremely helpful during my master’s program. During my BA, I was not very keen and neither did I find the support I was looking for. So, offering these personally experienced pieces of advice.
