History of Indian English Poetry – How to Study the Growth and Important Phases?
#1
Indian English Poetry may be seen as a new branch of English literature in India if we compare it to Indian English Novels. Isn't it? However, after the early outburst in the 1900s, the English poetry genre established itself only in the latter half of the 20th century in India and became authoritative. Poets like Sarojini Naidu, Sri Aurobindo, and Rabindranath Tagore, in the first phase and figures like Ezekiel, P Lal, Kamala Das, Mahapatra, Ramanujan and others in the phases after the Indian independence, did their best to establish English poetry as a successful branch of Indian English literature. Well, the genuine concern is understanding the growth, the trajectory and the hiatus between two successful campaigns in Indian English poetry! How can a student understand it the best way? How do we genuinely track and comprehend the growth of Indian English poetry? Though its history dates back to the early 19th century, Dutt sisters, Derozio and a few others, there is a long gap after that. Why is it so? What were the reasons? Let's discuss all that so that students of Indian English literature can take advantage of the understanding of senior members on this forum. Replies, responses and concerns are always welcome!
